Mine That Bird Is Defiant, Foul Mouthed (Humor)
One of the great Cinderella sports stories came from the Kentucky Derby when 50-1 long shot Mine That Bird won the run for the roses. It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks for the Derby Champ.
First, his jockey, Calvin Borel, dumped him for the phenomenal filly, Rachel Alexandra. Then, Borel rides Rachel Alexandra to a win over Mine That Bird in the Preakness. Finally, his Preakness jockey, Mike Smith, announced he was honoring a commitment to another owner for the date of the Belmont and would not ride Mine That Bird that day. The topsy-turvy fortnight is taking its toll on the three year old.

Brief History of the Belmont Stakes
The first Belmont in the United States was not the famous stakes race or even the man for whom it is named. Rather, the first Belmont was a race horse that arrived in California in 1853 from his breeding grounds of Franklin, Ohio. The Belmont Stakes, however, are named after August Belmont, a financier who made quite a name and fortune for himself in New York politics and society. Obviously, Mr. Belmont was also quite involved in horse racing, and his imprint is even intertwined within the history of the Kentucky Derby. read entire story

Borel Works Mine That Bird; Mount Still Open
By Ron Mitchell - BLOODHORSE
May 26, 2009 - Jockey Calvin Borel, who is in the enviable position of being considered to ride the country’s two best 3-year-olds in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), was aboard Monday, May 25 as Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Mine That Bird worked four furlongs in :51.
Despite being pleased with how the little gelding got over the track, Borel and his agent Jerry Hissam said they were not willing to make a commitment to Mine That Bird for the Belmont. Their indecision is due to the lack of a decision within the camp of Rachel Alexandra on whether the impressive BlackBerry Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner will run in the Belmont.

THEY SAID IT
MAY 30, 2009 - Brisnet
"I actually wasn't too surprised. I wondered whether she would go on and run the mile and a half. You know it's grueling to put these races back-to-back. She run one day earlier than I did in the Derby, but it's hard to put these races back-to-back and even harder on a filly. So that really didn't surprise me and it's one reason I've held out for Calvin, thinking possibly that she might not run."
—trainer Bennie "Chip" Woolley Jr. on hearing about the decision to skip Saturday's Belmont S. (G1) with RACHEL ALEXANDRA (Medaglia d'Oro)

Belmont Notes with Kelly Dennington
Saturday, June 6th, marks the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes, the final jewel of the 2009 Triple Crown series. Yet this year’s Crown is looking more like a charm bracelet; each contest a once-in-a-lifetime event providing memories for the ages. First, a 50-1 outsider took the Derby.
