Mine That Bird, the 2009 Kentucky Derby
winner, worked six furlongs in 1:12.40, handily, over the Oklahoma
Training Track Thursday morning with Calvin Borel aboard in
preparation for the Grade 1 Whitney Invitational at Saratoga Race
Course on August 7.
“I was real pleased – I thought it was his best work
yet,” said Lukas of the move, which was the lone workout at the
distance over the course. “We won’t work him between now and the
Whitney.”
Lukas was also happy with the 4-year-old gelding’s recent physical
development.
“He’s put on a lot of weight and muscle,” said Lukas. “Calvin
remarked about how much he has changed.”
With the Whitney expected to draw Quality Road, Blame, and
Haynesfield, Lukas knows Mine That Bird has a formidable task ahead.
“We’re definitely going into the deep end,” said Lukas. “You can’t
go into a race like this soft.” |

That Bird sharp in work - August 24, 2010
- SARATOGA, SPRINGS, N.Y. - Mine That Bird worked six furlongs in
1:11.85 over the Oklahoma training track Tuesday morning in
preparation for the Woodward Stakes on Sept. 4. He was equipped in
blinkers, equipment he will wear for the first time in the Woodward.
Jockey Rajiv Maragh was aboard for the work, in which
Mine That Bird went the first three furlongs in 36.03 seconds and
the last three-eighths in 35.82.
“That was the best work he’s had since we’ve had him,” Lukas said.
Lukas said that while Maragh worked the gelding, that doesn’t
necessarily mean he is going to replace Calvin Borel for the next
race. |

DERBY WINNER MINE THAT BIRD WORKS AT
CHURCHILL DOWNS - LOUISVILLE, KY. (Sunday,
October 17, 2010) – Mine That Bird, winner of the 2009 Kentucky
Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (Grade I), and Haynesfield, upset
winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup (GI) last time out, tuned up for
runs in the Breeders’ Cup World Championships with workouts on
Sunday at Churchill Downs.
Double Eagle Ranch and Buena Serte Equine’s Mine That Bird breezed
five furlongs in 1:01.20 for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
The move by the 4-year-old Birdstone gelding was the sixth-fastest
of 25 at the distance over a “fast” track. Lukas is pointing Mine
That Bird, who has failed to win eight races since his victory at
odds of 50-1 in Kentucky Derby 135, toward a possible run in the $1
million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (GI) on Saturday, Nov. 6. |

Fans get opportunity to say good-bye to Mine
That Bird - By Marty
McGee/Daily Racing Form - LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Nov. 26, 2010 - They
will scatter like the wind after the fall meet ends Sunday at
Churchill Downs, departing for Florida, Louisiana, Arkansas, and
elsewhere. The horses, that is. One will even leave Monday morning
on a van bound for New Mexico, completing a storybook circle that
began a little more than 18 months ago.
Mine That Bird
is going home, apparently for good, but not before the fans who turn
out here Sunday get to say farewell. His saga is the kind that makes
Kentucky Derby lore richer by the year, an almost unbelievable tale
of an underdog emerging from nowhere to reach the apex of the sports
world.
“He’s been good
to us, and we’re honored that Churchill will be having us in Sunday
so that the people can say good-bye,” said Leonard Blach, the equine
veterinarian who co-owns Mine That Bird with Mark Allen, his
Roswell, N.M., neighbor. “We’ll be here for that, then leave out
Monday morning.”
Mine That Bird
will be led over from the backstretch to the paddock along with the
runners for the seventh race. After the race, a winner’s circle
ceremony honoring the 4-year-old Mine That Bird will be conducted
with the co-owners and former trainer Chip Woolley on hand.
Mine That Bird
arrived at Churchill about as unheralded as possible for a Derby
starter on April 21, 2009, following a two-day trip from New Mexico.
He was 50-1 when he won the 135th Derby by 6 3/4 lengths under
Calvin Borel, becoming the second longest priced winner in race
history.
Churchill
officials said Friday they were unsure whether Borel would be able
to participate in the farewell because the three-time Derby-winning
jockey is recovering from the multiple jaw fractures he sustained in
a Nov. 20 spill at Delta Downs. |
